The office supply store aisles are filled to the brim with special deals, and Georgia's tax-free weekend is THIS weekend, July 30-31. Those signs can only mean that the new school year is just around the corner! While everyone prepares for a successful school year, parents and students alike should also read up on backpack safety.

The American Chiropractic Association recommends the following tips to ensure students can carry their notes and books around without causing musculoskeletal pain:

  • Make sure your backpack is no more than 5-10 percent of how much you weigh.
  • Choose a backpack with wide, padded straps.
  • Choose a compartmentalized backpack so you can distribute weight more evenly (as opposed to dumping everything into one section).
  • Adjust the straps so the backpack hangs correctly. A backpack should not be lower than four inches below your waistline.

Be sure to visit a GCA-member chiropractor so they can check your alignment! The Georgia Chiropractic Association wishes everyone a safe and pain-free 2016-17 school year.
